Getting the News Via Paper

It's Jill (enter laughter from at least a few of our college friends, you know who you are, dears) and I'm here to share with you the articles I have read the last few days.

Ok, let's be honest, my Tuesday night read consisted of a very hazy fumble through the beginning of the front (bottom) page story: "VVFD, ACFD1 still at odds heading into inspection."  Why would I choose to read an article with so many acronyms?  Really, who knows?  One would think I get enough nonsense acronyms at work each day, apparently I don't.

Oh and just for fun: idk my bff Jill

Anyhow, this article was talking about what is apparently a major debate the Albany County Fire Department is having with the Vedauwoo Volunteer Fire Department.  There are apparently issues with the safety of the VVFD's building and equipment and they are now being inspected.  Sadly, this is all I got out of the article before I got in bed and sleep for almost 12 hours (aka I wasn't feeling well.  I love me some good old Zzzzs, but whenever I sleep over 9 hours there is usually something wrong).  I am feeling much better but still very interested in sleeping more than usual.

Last night, I again hit the sack early so I only read one really quick article. (PS- yes, it is true we probably could be reading in the morning, but I honestly don't think the newspaper had even arrived yet when I started working today- darn two hour difference...).

The article was: "Brains, guts, glitz are honored at Glamour magazine's celebrity fest."  I was drawn into the article by the image of congresswoman Gabrielle Gifforts.  I was looking forward to reading how Glamour honored her.  Sadly, only three short paragraphs were about Gifforts and all it basically said was that she was awarded Women of the Year and that her husband accepted the award for her.  He was certain to note when receiving the award that his wife was still in charge and that she had very carefully gone through his planned remarks.  That was the end of that.  The rest of the article mentioned some of the other winners, but I was too distracted by some of the oddly pulled quotes, including this pairing: "Chelsea Handler was given her award by friend, Jennifer Aniston, who misted up as she praised Handler, even while nothing that 'Hald her life, she is drunk.'
'You really can do what you want. Just get out there and do it,' Handler said."

I assume there is sarcasm going on (just ask Eric, I am not always a master when it comes to identifying sarcasm) but to me the quotes feel awkward.

This evening I read a slew of articles, including:
1: "Family Circus creator dies"
2: "Turkey: quake kills at least three, dozens trapped"
3: "One last run"
4: "Penn State Trustees Oust Coach Paterno, Spanier"

1- Sad news, but sounded it sounded like Bil Keane had 89 great years and a very loving family, including a son who took over the comic a few years ago. Oh and the fact his name is Bil with just one L kind of makes me jealous.  How awesome would it be if my name was spelled with just one L? - Jil  It just simplifies everything.

2- More sad news about another quake in Turkey, which is following a tremor that killed 600.  Is it just me or does the world seem to be having a lot of really odd natural disasters recently?  Anyone believe that the world is coming to an end in 2012?

3- I am not a football kind of gal.  So I have been shocked that the front cover of the sports section always seems to produce an article about the U Dub football team.  I was pleasantly surprised to see an article about the men's cross country team.  They are headed to the NCAA Mountain Regional race.  It sounds like they have had a challenging season with illness and injuries.  Hope they have a good trot in Provo, UT.  Hey if nothing else there will be some more nice scenery.

4- All I have to say, is that I have read quite a few articles about the Penn State nonsense recently.  And this article, like most is disappointing in that they don't take a moment to mention the victims, but rather take the opportunity to glorify Joe Paterno.  Sadly, this article, written by the Onion (yes that Onion) really puts the topic at hand into perceptive.

Eric read an article today too:
It's short and sweet, but it made him excited.  Wyoming is creating a website that lists all of the public lands that you are allowed to hunt and fish on.  Eric only fishes, but it still excited him.  The wyoming fishing regulations talked all about public and private land that you can go to to fish on.  However, they did not list where they are, or how to find them.  Now this will cover that, and they made it open to the public to add their own input, like trash in the area, best way to get where, etc.  So that is really exciting, especially for someone who just moved to where some of the best fishing in the world is, but didn't know where to go.
